Video shows deputy hitting men before arrest
A Bronx father says he has video showing a city sheriff's deputy repeatedly punching his two sons during a parking ticket dispute Wednesday morning.
"He's an officer of the law, why is he doing this to my sons?" asks Nawas Menwer, who says the incident happened outside his furniture store at Third Avenue and East 168th Street.
Surveillance cameras at the store recorded the incident. Menwer says his sons were trying to avoid having their car placed in a boot due to unpaid parking tickets.
In the video, a man is preparing the car boot as Menwer Menwer, 25, walks to the car. The deputy also approaches and the two begin to argue.
Menwer Menwer is pushed to the ground, and then so is his brother, Senad Menwer. The officer then appears to hit one of the sons as he attempts to run away.
"He started beating him with a stick," the father says. "My son never touched him."
Later in the recording, the younger son calls 911 and asks the deputy for his badge number. The elder Menwer says that the deputy reacted angrily.
"When he went to get his badge number they dragged him one more time, to the other side where there is no camera, and they was beating him up," Menwer says.
The Sheriff's Department says the car has more than $600 in outstanding parking tickets, which is why it was being booted.
The two sons have been charged with obstruction of government enforcement for allegedly trying to prevent the device's installation.
Both of the sons were jailed, and Menwer says one went to a hospital for back pain.
He says that he would have paid the tickets and called the scuffle unnecessary.
"Thank God I still have the video," Menwer says. "And I will show it to everybody."
