A rememberance rally took place outside of Attorney General Letitia James’s office on Wednesday night for the late Ronald Anthony Smith.
Smith was a Brooklyn man who was fatally struck by an NYPD van last April. His family and friends took to the streets tonight to speak out following two NYPD-involved crashes that took place this past weekend, leaving one dead and another injured.
The family is calling for the two NYPD officers involved in the fatal striking of Smith to be fired, after bodycam footage was released from the deadly accident, showing the NYPD van accidentally striking Smith as he was walking along Eastern Parkway.
Those partaking in the vigil and rally are calling on Attorney General James to take serious action.
News 12 has reached out to the NYPD for comment on Smith’s death. The NYPD says the incident remains under investigation at this time, as do the two NYPD-involved accidents that took place most recently.
News 12 received the following statement from the Attorney General's office:
“In every case, the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation conducts an exhaustive review of the facts and evidence, and works to deliver New Yorkers the transparency and accountability they deserve. We extend our sincerest condolences to Mr. Smith’s family and loved ones, and are committed to continuing to provide them with answers to their questions as swiftly as possible.”
