The Dark and Dusk Campaign is officially in action this year.
The goal of the plan is to protect pedestrians and drivers as it gets darker earlier, specifically during the rush hour commute.
As part of the plan, the NYPD will be targeting drivers during the evening who speed or do not yield to pedestrians, among other things.
On Thursday, Department of Transportation workers, along with NYPD officers, passed out informational pamphlets to drivers and chatted with them during a press conference.  They also unveiled new signage in the city and discussed new ads that will be running on the radio and also on the TVs inside taxis.
The campaign is designed to get people to slow down and to make sure everyone is safe.
The Department of Transportation says that this year alone, it has completed 66 safety improvement projects around the city and plan to have at least 40 more completed by the end of the year.
This is the second year of the campaign.  Last year, officials say they saw a 50 percent decrease in pedestrian fatalities. This year, they are hoping to lower that number to zero.
