Bronx residents learned Sunday how members of the borough's last remaining Volunteer Ambulance Corps save lives.

The Throggs Neck Volunteer Ambulance Corps hosted a health fair to provide healthy food, CPR classes and health screenings to the community.

The group has been around for more than 35 years and continues to support the community.

Columbia University Medical Center was also on site to check blood pressure, A1C and BMI.

The volunteer group also hosted the event to raise money for its financial needs. They almost had to close down in the past due to monetary issues.

"There's a big difference between just keeping our doors open and actually thriving and doing and giving as much as we want to," said Erika Newsome, special events coordination of the Throggs Neck Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Supporters stress that residents should call the volunteer group directly if they have a health emergency because their response time is quicker than city ambulances in Throggs Neck.
