Dozens of volunteers gathered together to build New York City's first-ever “foodway” at Concrete Plant Park Saturday.
The goal of the foodway is to create a productive landscape made up of useful and edible plants that the community can use, interact with and learn from.
The area where the foodway is being built is an economically challenged neighborhood, which suffers from high hunger rates and a shortage of super markets, organizers say.
The plants in the foodway provide food and medicinal herbs for healthier lifestyles in the Bronx. The foodway also creates employment opportunities and a platform for learning.
"By integrating all of that community support and interest and by bringing something a little bit new and different, we hope to demonstrate to people in the Bronx that nature is here,” said Liam Kavanaugh, First Deputy Commissioner of NYC Parks. “It's available to them, it's important to their lives. They can learn a lot from it and they can enjoy it.”
Last summer the community converted a barge into a floating food forest in the same park, which is now part of the Bronx River Greenway.
