Volunteers pitch in to beautify Bronx park

Thousands of volunteers spent their weekend cleaning up the borough's parks in the wake of Sandy.

The Department of Parks and Recreation worked with the nonprofit Bronx is Blooming to put volunteers to work Saturday in Pelham Parkway.

"We're hoping to clear out the parks so kids can have backyards again," said Jen Beaugrand, with Bronx is Blooming. "Because the parks for many throughout the city, are their backyards."

Many volunteers were local, while some came from across the state.

The majority of the city's parks have reopened, but some remain closed due to poor conditions.
