Walmart to close White Plains store
Walmart Inc. is closing its store in downtown White Plains.
Employees said they received notification that the 275 Main St. store will close on Aug. 10. It opened in 2006 and employs almost 400 people.
"They told us today, two weeks in advance," said Jason Small, a store employee. "They are going to help us out, the best way they can. Other than that I don't know."
Walmart said it would try to relocate employees to its other locations.
"We expect to spend an estimated $52 million in New York this fiscal year through the remodeling of 15 stores, as well as the rollout of several in-store and online innovations designed to help busy customers save time and money," a spokesperson said.
Most full-time employees who don't receive transfers for severance.
The nearest other Walmart stores are in Suffern and Mohegan Lake. The distance to those locations could present problems for employees who don't have cars.
