A water company serving northern New Jersey says tests at some homes have shown elevated lead levels.

Suez said Wednesday that the higher levels were found at 16 of 108 homes tested in Bergen and Hudson counties and that it has reported the findings to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The company provided more details at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. It says the likely cause is lead water lines that connect water mains to homes and businesses.

"Any customer that we know is served by a utility lead service line, we're providing water quality testing for at their request. If that sample comes back in excess of the government standard, we will be providing that customer with a water filter to use within their home,” says Suez Water President David Stanton.

No lead has been detected in water leaving Suez's plant.
