A water main break in Melrose sent water shooting down Wales Avenue Tuesday afternoon, flooding basements of some apartments on the block.
When fire officials arrived on the scene, they saw that the street was starting to buckle and closed it off to residents and passersby.
The battalion chief on scene told News 12 that they called Con Edison to check for power outages. The Department of Environmental Protection was also called to isolate the water flow and shut off some of the valves.
First responders say 601 Wales Ave. was affected with over 6 feet of water.
The Department of Transportation was called to the scene to investigate the damage to the roadway. The FDNY says it could be a matter of days before the street is back open to the public.
No injuries were reported.
