A Brooklyn wine & spirits shop is seeing a boost in sales after staying open during most of the pandemic.
As many small businesses struggle to stay afloat amid closures due to the pandemic, Bedvyne Wine & Spirits has been open and thriving, increasing business since the pandemic started.
"There was a big spike in, as far as our orders and stuff like that. A lot of people were working from home now and people were stressed out, so you know when people are stressed out they drink more,” says co-owner Michael Brooks.
Brooks says the business only closed for a week since the pandemic started out of fears of staff contracting the coronavirus.
However, he says in order to ease those fears, safety measures are in place to keep staff and customers safe.
"Staff has to wear a mask, especially when they go outside to interact with customers. We don't allow customers into the store, just so we can keep everyone safe. And obviously tons of sanitizer now is being used,” says Brooks.
Bedvyne is a Black-owned wine shop that has been in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood for the past nine years.
Brooks says the wines and spirits that line the walls and shelves in the shop are organized by taste to help customers understand their palate, something he says helps them stand out among the competition.
"They'll have a much more enjoyable experience because they understand their palate, and they'll understand which wines suit their palate,,” says Brooks.
Brooks says he's hoping for things to one day return to pre-pandemic normalcy, but for now he's going to continue using his current business model and make necessary changes as time goes by.
