A Bronx woman is seeking answers after her husband died in police custody upstate.
On May 11, Andrew Kearse was taken into police custody, accused of driving erratically in the city of Schenectady. Kearse's widow, Angelique Negroni-Kearse, says he ran from police at first. But while in custody, authorities say the 36-year-old father of nine starting complaining of a medical issues.
Published reports say that when Kearse got to the police station, he was unresponsive and taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Negroni-Kearse says she's frustrated because everything that happened between her husband's arrest and death is a mystery to her, and that's why she reached out to Black Lives Matter of Greater New York.
Hawk Newsome, BLM of Greater New York president, and Negroni-Kearse say they spoke with Susan Perry, the woman Kearse was visiting. She claims to have seen police drag Kearse's lifeless body out of the car at the precinct. Perry was also arrested in the incident.
News 12 reached out to the Schenectady Police Department, the Schenectady mayor's office and state police for comment, but did not hear back.
The Schenectady district attorney's office tells News 12 that the case is in the hands of the attorney general since Kearse was unarmed and in police custody at his time of death. Kearse's widow says she too has reached out to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for help.
State police are now handling the investigation.
Before Kearse left for Schenectady, his widow says he had just returned home after serving two years in jail.
