Women’s History Month: Dr. Haydee Brown
March is Women's History Month, and News 12 The Bronx is celebrating a woman who works in a field that is dominated by men.
Dr. Haydee Brown is a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon who treats patients in the Bronx. She attended an all-women college and currently sits on the Women's Health Issues Advisory Board for The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.
Brown says her love for helping heal broken bones and strained limbs came after she was treated by an orthopedic surgeon when she was injured as a dancer. She says she considered a career in professional dance, but that changed when she learned that she could combine her love of dance with helping others heal.
Brown makes up a small percentage of women in the field of orthopedic surgery and an even smaller percentage of women of color in the field.
"I've broken through the glass ceiling and so have the many women of color who came before me so now I'm pushing to bring more with and behind me" says Brown.
During Dr. Brown's career, she has assisted with the care of NFL players, basketball players and professional dancers.
