Congressional candidate Perry Gershon is accusing incumbent Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin of purposely trying to mislead voters ahead of November's midterm election.
The Democrat points to a mailer sent out by the Zeldin campaign. On one portion of the mailer, it correctly informs voters that absentee ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 5. But in two other sections, it lists Nov. 6 as the deadline.
“There's no doubt in my mind that the Zeldin campaign is trying to engage in voter suppression,” says Gershon. “This is targeted at college students. College students are worked up about gun violence in America.”
Two years ago, a Zeldin campaign flyer incorrectly listed the absentee ballot deadline as well. Gershon says it's clear there's a pattern.
“When you do it wrong twice, intent goes with it,” he says. “There’s no doubt in my mind that the Zeldin campaign is trying to engage in voter suppression by telling people the wrong date to mail in their absentee votes.”
The Zeldin campaign says the contradictory dates listed on the mailer are just a mistake. It said the same in 2016. This time the printer who produced the flyer is claiming responsibility for the error.
Scott Nordin, of PDQ Print and Mail, tells News 12, “Unfortunately in a printing error, the absentee ballot mail piece sent out for Lee Zeldin last week had a mistake in the date absentee ballots need to be postmarked by."
Gershon is calling for an investigation into the Zeldin campaign for mailing inaccurate flyers in consecutive campaigns.
A spokesperson for Zeldin calls Gershon “unhinged” and says there is “No conspiracy. No pattern.”
