A commercial fishing boat is still tied to Pier 1 in Sheepshead Bay Thursday and partially underwater after it started sinking Wednesday night.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the boat, named Capt. Jeff, left around 7 p.m. for a fishing trip with 11 on board, including the captain. But the trip was cut short when something went wrong.
According to officials, the boat returned to the dock around 9 p.m. The owner noticed the exhaust system had fallen off —and that’s when the boat began taking on water quickly.
Joey Haggerty, who was helping bring the boat in, said it all happened fast.
“We tried to tie it up so it wouldn't go down, but it just kept going down,” he told News 12. “I just wanted to make sure everybody got off the boat safely and nobody got hurt.”
FDNY says one person was still on board when the boat fully submerged, but they were rescued by firefighters and treated by EMS. Everyone on board made it out safely, and no serious injuries were reported.
The Coast Guard is now investigating what caused the incident. A private crew was also seen placing floating barriers in the water to contain any potential oil or fuel spill.
Haggerty says rough seas may have played a role in the emergency.
“The seas were like 4 to 6 feet. When it’s like that, the boat’s bouncing around … who knows what happened,” he said.
The boat’s owner, a longtime captain with decades in the commercial fishing business, told News 12 he's happy everyone is OK.
