Patients are seeing success at the first national diabetes prevention program in the Bronx.

Shiela Powell had bone cancer, was pre-diabetic and almost died twice, she says.

She was among a group of six who were enrolled in the first national diabetic prevention program funded by the Center for Disease Control at the Union Community Health Center in the Fordham section of the Bronx.

Lizbeth Tavares, the director of the program says there are 16 main sessions that teach patients about how to change their relationship with food.

Tavares says the program focuses on lifestyle change and moving the patients away from the numbers that will lead them to Type 2 diabetes.

Powell saw that success and credits the program with giving her a new life.

A new life and new knowledge, she says that she is passing on to her three children.
