Police are ramping up patrols in parts of Suffolk County following a shooting in Central Islip that left an 18-year-old injured, which sent shockwaves through the local community.
Authorities say an 18-year-old male was struck by gunfire around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday on Ash Street. He was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The incident comes amid a troubling rise in gun violence in Suffolk County. According to state crime data, there have been eight deadly shootings in the county so far in 2025 — compared to just one by this time last year.
Police did not provide additional details about the circumstances of the shooting. No arrests have been made as of Thursday afternoon.
While Suffolk County Police Department officials declined to speak on camera, a department spokesperson confirmed that the Third Precinct is increasing patrols in “areas of concern” in an effort to reduce violent crime.
