The 19-year anniversary of the death of a West African immigrant who was shot to death by a group of police officers in Soundview was marked Sunday.

On Feb. 4, 1999, four officers mistook Amadou Diallo for someone else and shot him to death.

His mother, Kadiatou Diallo, says she has been trying to keep his memory alive ever since, as well as support other families with the Amadou Diallo Foundation.

Diallo returns to Soundview every year to remember her son. She is accompanied by other mothers who have lost their sons.

Iris Baez flew to Soundview from Florida to light candles, say a prayer and stand by other mothers bonded by the same loss.

"This is a club that no mother wants to be in, but we're here and we have to support each other because that's all we have,” she says.

The mothers say they don’t just gather on Diallo’s death, and that they have become activists, promoting racial healing and a better relationship between police and the community.
