An estimated 1 million people packed into Times Square to experience the New Year's Eve tradition that dates back more than hundred years.

Organizers estimated 100 million people watched the event on TV, with viewership around the world topping 1 billion.

This year's ball was covered with about 3,000 Waterford crystal triangles and more than 32,000 LED lights.

There was a similar scene three hours later in Seattle. The Space Needle lit up with a fireworks display at midnight. Earlier in the day Thursday, revelers ere met with a show from the northern lights.

The Las Vegas strip was ablaze in fireworks. Hundreds of thousands packed the area for the festivities as celebrities like Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 performed inside casinos before and after midnight.

The annual peach drop in Atlanta attached thousands. Just like the Times Square ball, the peach descended at midnight with pyrotechnics at the end.
