The FDNY and NYPD confirmed that two children were found dead inside a Mount Hope apartment Monday morning.
The boy and girl, both age 5, were found inside an apartment at 240 East 175 St. Police say they responded to the call made at 11:20 a.m.
At a press conference held on Monday afternoon just after 3 p.m., the NYPD did confirm that they are investigating the incident as a crime scene. The medical examiner is at the scene, but it has not yet been determined if foul play was involved.
Officials say that the mother was at the residence the entire time but is now at the hospital and is very emotionally distraught.
The father of the two children is currently in NYPD custody at the 46th Precinct and is cooperating with law enforcement. He was not at home at the time of the incident.
According to the FDNY, no carbon monoxide was detected in the air inside of the home.
Priests came by to light candles for those two young lives lost, singing hymns and sharing words about the pain felt across the neighborhood for the loss of the two twins.
