A Bronx artist’s work is being highlighted at the Bronx Museum of the Arts more than 30 years after his passing.

Darrel Ellis grew up just a few steps away from the museum and was a frequent visitor while also compiling a portfolio of his own.

More than 160 pieces of Ellis’ work are featured at the museum, including portraits of family members that he used to work through trauma and loss during his life. His art included many photos taken by his father, who ran a professional portrait studio.

Ellis passed away in 1992 from AIDS-related causes at 33 years old. Curators at the Bronx Museum of the Arts hope that this exhibit from the Crotona Park native inspires children and young adults in the Bronx to pursue their artistic dreams.
