Elected officials make renewed push to make NYC transportation more affordable
The Riders Alliance says just over $61 million will be added to the city budget to expand the Fair Fares Program by 200%.

A weeklong outreach effort from Council Member Amanda Farias’ office put its focus on transportation Thursday.
The council member’s office teamed up with the Riders Alliance to talk about the Fair Fares Program with Bronx residents in an effort to get more qualifying New Yorkers to apply for the program that would allow them to pay less for New York City public transportation.
The Riders Alliance says just over $61 million will be added to the city budget to expand the Fair Fares Program by 200%, which could impact approximately 1.75 million New Yorkers.
Members of the organization were talking to Bronx residents about what that additional cash could do for them.
“Fair Fares is really the only program our system has that allows low-income New Yorkers to get 50% off their fare, and that includes Access-A-Ride,” said Danna Dennis, community organizer for Riders Alliance.
The deadline for the mayor and City Council to agree on a city budget is Saturday, July 1.
