A sinkhole in the middle of a busy intersection in the Belmont section of the Bronx is raising safety concerns among residents who say the roadway hazard could damage vehicles and put drivers at risk.
The sinkhole, marked by a traffic cone placed inside it, is located at the intersection of Webster Avenue and East 182nd Street. Residents say drivers traveling through the area have little time to react before encountering the hole.
"I'm not a driver, but that's really dangerous," said neighborhood resident Yamilet Vazquez. "Your tire would definitely get popped."
Vazquez said the condition of the roadway is frustrating and questioned whether public funds are being used effectively to address infrastructure issues in the neighborhood.
"We work and there's not a lot of stuff that gets done in the streets, like potholes," she said.
She also expressed concerns that parts of Belmont are being overlooked while improvements are made elsewhere in the borough.
"If you go to Third Avenue, they changed a lot over there," Vazquez said. "But what about the rest of the Bronx?"
News 12 reached out to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection about the sinkhole. City officials said they are looking into the issue.
