A call for action was made Wednesday afternoon at Fordham Plaza, seeking justice for a Bronx woman who was found dead in a stairwell after a visit to the Montefiore Health Center last month

Sary Mao, 57, was a survivor of the Cambodian genocide and fled to the Bronx in the '80s. She was also an active member of Mekong NYC, a Southeast Asian advocacy group.

"They took five days to find her, and I heard that they couldn't tell how she looked," said Khamarin Nhann, campaign director of Mekong NYC. "And it's messed up because at the end of the day, that could happen to any community member, and there's a lot of people of color that go to this hospital."

In a statement to the organization, Montefiore Medical Group said:

"I can share with you that Montefiore does not own or operate the building, therefore we have been in touch with the management company and owners of the building to better understand what occurred when Ms. Mao left our facility."
