The Landmarks Preservation Commission has now named New York City's 150th historic district, and it is located in the Bronx.

Manida Street is located in the Hunts Point neighborhood, and it is a block that community members and elected officials say reflects a time when the Bronx was going through drastic economic and infrastructure changes, but still remains the same present day.

"We celebrate the pride of place and commitment to community preservation that this historic district embodies," said Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair and Commissioner Sarah Carroll.

"As a result of this multiyear process future generations of Bronxites and New Yorkers will forever know the important of Hunts Point and the influence Manida Street played in that history," said Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr.

The block now has two markers, one on each end of the block, that have a map of the district and a brief description on why it is so historic.

"I've been coming here since the late '80s early '90s, and this block was always different than any other block in the Hunts Point Peninsula," said resident Maria Torres.

Community members also honored the memory of resident Jose Ortiz, who they say lived on the block since the 70s and advocated for the neighborhood's historic acknowledgement. Ortiz recently passed away in September of this year.
