Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries continue to harm New Yorkers, and the problem has grown into a national issue.
The FDNY and government agencies are now coming together to launch a new campaign they hope will help Americans understand this growing danger.
The FDNY has tracked 239 fires connected to lithium-ion batteries this year alone. They say that those fires have brought about 124 injuries and 17 deaths – including three people who were killed in a Crown Heights fire this past Sunday.

The new campaign, called Take CHARGE, was put on display on Wednesday at Randall’s Island, focusing on informing people about how to prevent these fires.
Fire officials are stressing that people must purchase certified products, properly charge their batteries and watch for signs such as overheating and punctures in battery packs.
