Tenants in a long-neglected building are one step closer to co-ownership

Residents at 2201 to 2205 Davidson Avenue tell News 12 that more than 80% of their building has signed on to enter the city’s Third Party Transfer Program (TPT).

After years of leaky ceilings, broken down elevators, rat infestations, and even more – the tenants hope becoming a co-op gives them a true say in how they live. With enough signatures to enter the TPT, the residents must meet and select a sponsor who essentially acts as a building manager.
According to HPD, the building has had 366 complaints, 874 violations, 522 charges, and 42 lawsuits, including one filed by tenants that we covered in March.
Sources from the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development told News 12 that the owner of the building failed to appear in court. As a result, the Department obtained a judgment of $423,000 in civil penalties from the owner.
