New efforts to crack down on illegally parked tractor-trailers in Wakefield

Residents in Wakefield have reported that for years, tractor-trailers have illegally parked in parts of the north Bronx, including the Nereid Avenue Bridge. After News 12 did a follow up story on Sept. 3, our newsroom received calls from viewers that the situation had improved—though they remain skeptical of long-term progress. News 12’s Noëlle Lilley went back to the neighborhood to check out the progress.
Community Board 12 told News 12 that an initiative from the mayor’s office allowed the 47 Precinct to commit more manpower to issuing summonses and towing vehicles.
Community Board 12 and New York City Department of Transportation sources said that the illegal parking issue was an issue of enforcement.
When News 12 reached out to the NYPD for an update, it informed us of “a joint operation with NYPD Highway Patrol and Traffic Enforcement Division" to remove the 18-wheelers.
Community members in Wakefield say that they appreciate the progress but hope to see long-term change and consistent enforcement, particularly regarding littered trash and illegal dumping.
Some residents suggest cameras to catch truckers in the act. Community Board 12 has recommended a bike lane be built to discourage illegal parking.
According to city law Intro 906, the city is required to establish trucking sites in each borough by December 2025. Truckers who need support can access NYC DOT's Truck Smart Guide and Truck Route Map, which includes information about available off-street truck parking options.
