Construction on historic New Rochelle bridge over I-95 alters traffic flow

Crews are still busy at work replacing a 65-year-old bridge over I-95 in New Rochelle and there is a temporary traffic pattern in place.
The $31.8 million project to replace the North Avenue Bridge is being done in three stages, and right now, they are in the second phase with the new traffic pattern that recently started.
Currently, northbound traffic is moving over the new outer bridge sections that were built during stage one. They've done this so the remainder of the old bridge can be removed and rebuilt, which is the second stage of the project.
Thruway Authority officials say for safety reasons they've had to reroute southbound traffic around the work zone. Drivers are being detoured at Lockwood Avenue and directed to Memorial Highway.
State traffic officials estimate 20,000 vehicles use the aging North Avenue Bridge daily, and they say this complete replacement had to be done.
This new traffic pattern is expected to be in place until the fall, when traffic will be moved to the center of the new, wider, taller bridge so that sidewalks and other work can be completed for the final stage.
The project is expected to be completed in the fall.
