Yonkers fire officials say a rockslide caused a large boulder to partially collapse a building located at 1256 Saw Mill River Road Monday Morning in Yonkers.

Officials with the Yonkers Fire Department say the rockslide happened at around 7 a.m. on Monday.

A large boulder in the rockslide, which is a type of landslide, hit Peterson Tool Rental, causing half the building to collapse.

A 500-gallon heating oil tank was additionally damaged causing fuel to spill out on the street.

Hazmat crews and first responders worked to clean and absorb the spill throughout the day.

According to associate professor Matthew Aiello-Lammens with Pace University's Enviornmental Studies and Sciences Department, landslides this time of year are not uncommon.

"We've been going through these freeze-thaw cycles where water will seep into different cracks in the hills sides...and as it gets cold and freezes, it'll expand, and as things thaw out in the Spring, it starts letting things go," said Professor Aiello-Lammens.

Fire crews told News 12 a demolition is required on the property.

No one was reported injured in the collapse.
