City Island community gathers for annual Memorial Day parade

The coastal community of City Island gathered on Monday for a Memorial Day parade. It is considered a small but spirited show of solidarity to remember the service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States.
Pipes and drums echoed on the sunny afternoon, as veterans, military members and community groups marched for about a mile along City Island Avenue.
The group made several stops for wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments and cemeteries.
People lined the streets, stood on front stoops and enjoyed outdoor dining during the parade. It was organized by the Leonard H. Hawkins American Legion Post 156.
“I’m a 34-year veteran, active duty and reserve time,” said Joseph Goonan, a member of the American Legion Post 156. “I understand what it is to have loss, and I honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
Organizers said it was particularly important for the community to remember the 400 men from City Island who died during World War II.
