The New York City Council approved the Atlantic Avenue mixed-use plan on Wednesday. It is a rezoning project which they say has been in the works for many years.
The project was led by Council members Crystal Hudson and Chi Osse. They say the roughly 13-block stretch from Vanderbilt to Nostrand Avenue along Atlantic Avenue and surrounding streets will see new changes. It will create 4,600 units, with 1,900 of them being permanently affordable.
"There are homes that will be as low as $800 a month for a studio and three-bedroom apartments for as much as $1,200 a month," said Osse.
Osse says those homes are reserved for low- to moderate-income New Yorkers and people who've experienced homelessness.
The project also plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into parks, infrastructure, beautification of the Franklin Avenue Station and safety improvements to Atlantic Avenue.
Additionally, the plan will provide legal services for tenants and homeowners and will create workforce development programs.
