Coyote sighting prompts Westport police warning
Police say coyotes pose very little risk to humans, but do pose a risk to pets - especially ones under 30 pounds. However, they will sometimes fight with larger pets, police say.

A coyote was seen Tuesday night on Roseville Road in the area of Joanne Circle in Westport, police say.
Westport Animal Control was notified that a resident and their dog went outside around 10 p.m. and, unbeknownst to them, a coyote was nearby.
Officials say the coyote attempted to approach and lunge at the dog, but the resident was able to run back inside before the animals engaged with each other.

Police are reminding people to supervise their pets while they are in their yard and that a fenced enclosure is the best way to prevent an encounter with a coyote or other animals. They say that while deer fences prevent deer from entertaining yards, coyotes and small animals can slip under the fences.
If you are walking a small pet and see a coyote, you are advised to pick up the animal. People should also stay away but keep an eye on them.
Coyotes can be distracted by noise such as a whistle or an air-horn or by throwing an object like a ball, sticks or rocks, officials say.
