The month of January didn't only come with snow. It also brought tax season along with it. Monday marked the official start of the 2026 tax filing season.
"This year, there's more reason than ever to be excited about your taxes," said Mark Steber, chief tax officer at Jackson-Hewitt.
Steber said there's no reason to stress over the season, even with the new changes this year. Some of the changes that might impact your return are:
No tax on tips
No tax on overtime
No tax on car loan interest
Additional deduction for anyone over 65
Steber says it's important to have an organized plan.
"Right now, is a really important time, because documents are coming in; they'll continue to come in over the next few days and weeks. They may come in the mail; they may come in your electronic email, so be watchful of that," Steber said.
Before you get started on your taxes, you'll need your personal information, including your social security number and address, W-2 forms and any documents for credits or deductions. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) also provides step-by-step instructions to prepare you before you file.
"I have people who are coming in now. They have all their paperwork and are starting right away. It's a benefit because the IRS is less busy the earlier part of the year. As time goes on, computers, as well as people, get overworked, and things do slow down. So, the earlier you get it in, the better it is for you," said Mark Cody, an accountant.
