Chris Matto has spent most of us life helping others. Now, the 33-year-old third-generation firefighter needs someone to help him.

"I could never ask anybody, ‘Hey, can I have one of your organs?’ Matto says. "How do you ask somebody for a body part?”

His kidney disease has progressed to kidney failure.

Matto's wife is putting the word out to try to find a kidney donor.

“How do you explain to a 5 and a 3-year-old that dad is sick?" Matto says. "All they know is dad's not feeling well, dad gets tired, and dad can’t play like he used to be able to play."

“Hoping for a miracle," Matto's wife Katie says. "I’m hoping we can avoid dialysis and get my husband back."

Matto says the community has rallied around him in his time of need. He says even the New York City fire department has helped share his story.

"I never thought in a million years that that would happen," Matto says. "I just want to watch my kids grow old."

The family says those interested should call the Yale Transplant Center at 866-925-3897 to see if they could be a potential donor.
