The Bronx Documentary Center is now exhibiting a career retrospective of photographer Martha Cooper, who documented the emerging hip-hop, breakdance, and graffiti culture in the Bronx during the 1970s and 1980s.
Her photobook "Subway Art," which features many walls and train cars in the borough covered with graffiti, is seen as a seminal text by artists around the world.
"I've heard so many heartwarming comments tonight from people who say these pictures remind me of my life growing up in the Bronx", said Cooper at the opening night of the retrospective Thursday night.
It's through her lens that the world has seen this culture developed in the borough.
The exhibition shows her whole career in documenting urban culture across the world - from breakdancing girls in Berlin, underground tattoo culture in Japan and the Sowebo neighborhood in Baltimore.
The show is running until June 14 at the Bronx Documentary Center's Annex at 364 East 151 Street.
