A Newburgh man is facing charges after police say a 2-year-old girl was injured and taken to the hospital.
Authorities say the incident happened Sunday at a residence on Washington Street. EMS took the child to St. Luke’s Hospital.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office says 27-year-old Lester Chavez was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and felony criminal mischief.
Officials have not revealed the extent of the child's injuries but say that this level of assault charge is typically used in cases involving injuries like bruising or minor lacerations. They add that the investigation is still in its early stages and no medical records have been received yet.
Chavez was released, since the charges are not bail eligible, and has been ordered to stay away from the child and her mother.
He is due back in court on April 21.
