Residents packed City Island on Monday for the community’s annual Memorial Day parade, gathering under clearing skies to honor fallen service members.
Red, white and blue lined City Island Avenue as marchers carrying American flags made their way down the mile-long stretch. Others kept step to the beat of drums as paradegoers cheered from the sidewalks.
The event served as both a patriotic celebration and a solemn reminder of the meaning behind Memorial Day, with community members paying tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country.
“I’m very proud to be an American,” one attendee said. “I’m here to salute the soldiers who fought in the war. My husband was one, and my best friend, Rusty, gave his life in Vietnam.”
Organizers and attendees said the day was about more than tradition and emphasized the importance of remembering those who died in the line of service to the United States.
