Kayaker rescued from rough water conditions in Hampton Bays

Authorities say she got stranded on a sand bar near the Shinnecock Canal around 4:30 p.m.

A kayaker was rescued from rough water conditions in the Hampton Bays, according to the Town of Southampton Police Department.

Authorities say she got stranded on a sand bar near the Shinnecock Canal around 4:30 p.m.

They say she called for help and then jumped into the water.

Southampton Town Marine Patrol responded to the area along with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Marine Patrol located the kayaker in the water and took her aboard a boat.

The Coast Guard found and recovered her kayak.

A Marine Patrol officer suffered a leg injury due to the sea conditions during the rescue effort.

The kayaker was taken to Meschutt County Park where the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance treated her for hypothermia.

The Marine Patrol officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
