Clarkstown Police Chief Jeffrey Wanamaker has retired, closing out an almost 40-year career with the department, including the last five years leading more than 160 officers.

"I've been very blessed. It's a great career and I would do it all over again," Wanamaker said as he marked his final day in uniform.

Wanamaker comes from a long line of Rockland County law enforcement leaders. His father served as police chief in Orangetown, and his grandfather led the Upper Nyack Police Department.

He said the decision to retire felt right.

"It's time. I'm young enough that I can still go and travel and enjoy life, and I think the wife is ready for me to retire," he jokingly said.

Looking back, Wanamaker said some of his most meaningful moments came during his time with the department’s Honor Guard. He recalled the dozens of ceremonies he took part in for fallen FDNY members following the Sept. 11 attacks.

"Having the loved ones come up and thank us for doing that. And it was such an honor to do it. I'm going to cherish those memories. It was the proudest moment of my career," he said.

Wanamaker’s service has been recognized both locally and nationally, with tributes extending from the halls of the Clarkstown Police Department to the floor of Congress.

"I've done everything that I've wanted. There's no regrets," he said.

Captain James Fay will serve as the next Clarkstown police chief.
