FDNY: Open building doors caused fire to intensify in Belmont

Officials held a press conference Friday morning and said the five-alarm fire could have been worse if it wasn’t for their quick response.

The FDNY is applauding the efforts of firefighters following Tuesday’s deadly fire in Belmont.

Officials held a press conference Friday morning and said the five-alarm fire could have been worse if it wasn’t for their quick response.

Two people died in the fire, including 17-year-old Michelle Gonzalez, who was visiting a friend at the time. Investigators said both victims were found in the stairwell, and the fire escapes weren’t utilized.

They also said one of the biggest issues was that the doors to the building were left open, causing the fire to intensify.

"We cannot stress to you enough, please close the door. When there is a fire, close the door to your apartment. Close the door to the common areas within the building," said Dan Flynn, first deputy commissioner FDNY.

Officials said it’s also important that people have a plan in place when a fire happens.
