A 75-year-old man was hospitalized with burns to his hands after a house fire on 17th Street Tuesday, police said.

Norwood police officers and members of the Norwood Fire Department were dispatched at 3:55 p.m. after a contractor working on a nearby home reported the fire.

Police said the first officers at the scene found the resident outside his home. He told officers he was the only person home and did not know how the fire started.

The man was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. Officers contacted his wife by phone and confirmed she was safe and that no one else was believed to be inside the home.

Police said two firefighters were treated by EMS at the scene.
