Students and young tenants are expected to speak directly with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Thursday evening during a public housing hearing at Hostos Community College focused on affordability, displacement and unsafe living conditions.
The event, hosted by More Perfect Union in collaboration with the mayor’s office, will give New Yorkers the opportunity to share personal experiences regarding rising rents, housing insecurity and bad landlords as the city continues to grapple with an ongoing affordability crisis.
The hearing comes just two days after Mamdani unveiled “Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era” — a sweeping housing proposal aimed at expanding affordable housing citywide.
A major goal of the plan is to build 200,000 affordable housing units while preserving and stabilizing another 200,000 over the next decade. The administration says the proposal would require a $22 billion capital commitment over the next five years.
Part of that affordability push includes a major investment in Hunts Point centered around The Peninsula redevelopment project in the South Bronx.
The event also builds on earlier “Rental Rip-Off” hearings held across the five boroughs earlier this year. The mayor has said those hearings played a role in shaping the urgency behind his new housing plan.
The hearing is free and open to the public.
