A Highbridge woman says she's been living without hot water for more than a month and believes deteriorating conditions inside her apartment building are forcing her to consider moving out.
Shamika McDuffie says the building's boiler has been broken since late June, and management has offered no solution. She says she has to boil pots of water on the stove and pour them into her bathtub just to take a warm bath.
McDuffie, who says she has diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and sciatica, says carrying heavy pots of boiling water is painful and dangerous.
She also claims her apartment has mold, her oven does not work, the building's intercom is broken and the mailboxes are damaged. She says long-vacant apartments have attracted squatters and mice, making conditions even worse.
"I don't want to go back into the shelter system, but if they don't fix this situation, I have no choice," McDuffie said.
News 12 reached out to the building's management company for comment but has not received a response.
McDuffie says she hopes the issues are addressed soon but, in the meantime, is preparing for the possibility of leaving the apartment she's called home for the past 23 years.
