Police search for suspect accused of slashing man on Bronx subway platform; commuters share safety concerns

Police are searching for the man accused of slashing a stranger following an argument on a Bronx subway platform in West Farms.
According to the NYPD, the incident happened around 8:35 a.m. Sunday at the East 180th Street subway station. Investigators say a 45-year-old man was waiting for a northbound 5 train when another man pushed him as they boarded the train. The encounter escalated into a verbal dispute before the suspect allegedly slashed the victim in the neck with an unknown object.
The victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.
As police continue searching for the suspect, some commuters told News 12 they are paying closer attention to their surroundings while riding the subway.
"It's best to just walk away. You don't know the mental state of these people," one commuter said.
Another rider said avoiding distractions, such as using a cellphone, can help people stay aware of their surroundings while traveling.
For Jeremiah Nuñez, stories like this are especially personal. He says his father was on his way to the Bedford Park subway station when a man was stabbed there a few months ago.
"He was like a little late, and I don't know what could happen to him," Nuñez said.
Other commuters also shared advice for staying safe, encouraging riders to remain aware of their surroundings and, when possible, travel with other people.
The suspect remains at large. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
