Multiple officers fatally shot a man who the NYPD says charged at them with a butcher knife Sunday afternoon in Manhattan's Lower East Side.
Police identified the man as 54-year-old Ray Chan, who they say had a history of mental illness. The NYPD says Chan attacked his 75-year-old father before officers arrived at 126 Ludlow St.
Detectives say officers responded to multiple 911 calls for an assault in progress just after 4 p.m. They ascended the stair case and encountered Chan, who was holding a large butcher knife.
Officers pleaded with Chan multiple times to show his hands, according to NYPD. Instead, he continued toward the officers, which prompted them to open fire on Chan.
Paramedics rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he died.
His father, Chung Chan, suffered a laceration to his head and is expected to be OK, according to police.
The NYPD says the officers involved in the incident were also taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation. The exact number of officers involved was not immediately known.
According to the NYPD, Chan did not have a criminal history in New York City.
Police released an image of the butcher knife, which they say was recovered at the scene.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is on a planned vacation, said he was briefed about the incident in a post on X.
