Man found dead after going for swim off Shelter Island hotel dock

The victim’s wife notified staff at the hotel after he did not return for several hours.

A man was found dead after going for a swim on the East End Wednesday morning.

Shelter Island Town Police Department, along with the Shelter Island Fire Department and Shelter Island Town Emergency Medical Services, responded to a report of a missing swimmer around 12 p.m.

Spencer Korwin, 38, of Manhattan, went for a morning swim off a dock around 8 a.m. in the waters of Shelter Island Sound - North Channel, near Crescent Beach, according to police.

The victim’s wife notified staff at the hotel where their family was staying while visiting the area after he did not return for several hours.

Town agencies initiated an extensive search with assistance from East Marion, Greenport, Southold, and Orient fire departments, as well as the Southold police dive team and drone unit, and the U.S. Coast Guard boat and helicopter units.

Korwin was subsequently located by divers underwater near the dock from which he had entered the water and pronounced dead at the scene, officials say.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner will conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

At this time, police tell News 12 the incident is believed to be accidental in nature and no criminality is suspected.
