Woman critically injured in University Heights crash

A 26-year-old woman is in critical condition after a crash on the Major Deegan Expressway early Monday morning.

The crash happened just before 1:40 a.m. on the Major Deegan near the W. Fordham Road exit.

Police say a 21-year-old man was operating a BMW traveling south bound on the major Deegan when he collided the rear of a 2020 Jeep Wrangler traveling in the same direction.

A 26-year-old woman operating the Jeep Wrangler was ejected from the car from the impact.

The woman suffered severe trauma to her head and body. She was transported by EMS to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition.

The 21-year-old operator of the BMW was taken into custody. There are no official charges at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

Police have advised commuters to take alternate routes as lanes continue to stay closed during the investigation.
