A former New York City Department of Correction officer from Freeport has been sentenced to two years’ probation and ordered to pay more than $80,000 in restitution for fraudulently collecting military leave pay.
Leah Mathieu, 35, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in April.
Investigators say she was released from state active duty with the New York Naval Militia for the unauthorized use of a government vehicle.
She did not inform the DOC of her release. Instead, prosecutors say she falsely claimed she would not be at work because she was continuing active duty pursuant to a new set of orders that she had forged.
The offense occurred between December 2022 to March 2024, according to prosecutors.
