Seniors at a building on East New York Avenue say they are taking action to demand repairs after both elevators went out of service, leaving the stairs as the only way to reach apartments on upper floors.
Residents say the outage makes getting home difficult and raises safety concerns, particularly for those who rely on walkers, wheelchairs and canes.
"It's a risk. You can trip and fall. Anything can happen," said resident Janet Bruce.
Residents and their families say the elevators have broken down repeatedly. City records show more than a dozen elevator complaints at the address since 2020, including five in the past week alone.
Doris, whose mother lives in the building, says calls to management go directly to voicemail. Resident Thelma says the situation is "getting to be too much for us."
News 12 observed an out-of-order sign on the first floor, but there were no warning signs on the floors above.
"We should not be living like this," Bruce said.
Building management declined to comment when News 12 asked what was being done to repair the elevators.
