One person was injured after a fire broke out in a fourth-floor apartment at a residential building in Spuyten Duyvil early Monday morning, according to the FDNY.

FDNY Chief Battalion Donnelly said firefighters responded to the blaze at 511 W. 235th Street at approximately 2:22 a.m.

Citizen video shows flames shooting from a fourth-floor apartment window as crews worked to bring the fire under control. Residents were forced to evacuate as firefighters battled the blaze. Neighbors said they were alerted to the emergency by the building superintendent’s wife, who went door-to-door knocking on apartments and urging residents to get out. Several residents described her as a hero for helping warn those inside.

FDNY said the fire was extinguished shortly after 3 a.m. The person with minor injuries was treated at the scene by EMS.

The building superintendent said at least two apartments — one on the third floor and another on the fifth floor — sustained water damage during the firefighting efforts.

“We lived right below when we heard this noise and people yelling, ‘Fire!’ Luckily, we got out in time,” said resident Peter, whose apartment was affected. “You have all your belongings and your life right below it. It’s all ruined. It’s all water damage.”

The fire also left one resident searching for a beloved pet. Christina, who lives in the building, said her cat, Reggie, went missing during the evacuation. She said firefighters instructed residents to leave their pets behind as they exited the building, and when she returned after the fire was extinguished, Reggie was nowhere to be found.

Christina said she rescued Reggie two years ago and is asking anyone who comes across the cat to help bring him home safely.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
